Is voice and speech coaching the same as elocution lessons?

I’ve seen an increase in enquiries recently from people searching for elocution lessons. It is interesting how certain phrases come back into fashion. The word elocution carries a particular feel. It suggests clarity, refinement and perhaps even a certain era of public speaking. Indeed, as children, my sisters and I were sent for elocution lessons while at a convent school in Ireland – doesn’t that sound like a different era?

But is voice and speech coaching the same as elocution lessons?

The short answer is no. They overlap, but they are not identical. Understanding the difference can help you choose the right support for your goals.

What are elocution lessons?

Traditionally, elocution lessons focused on clear pronunciation, precise articulation and speaking “correctly”. They were often associated with reducing a regional accent, softening strong speech patterns or helping someone sound more polished in formal settings.

In the past, elocution lessons were sometimes about fitting in. They aimed to align someone’s speech with a particular standard of English, often linked to social or professional expectations. For instance, it’s likely that my father, who was from Galway city in the west of Ireland, didn’t want his children growing up with the local accent he noticed in the rural town in the south west of Ireland where I grew up.

Today, many people searching for elocution lessons are looking for:

  • Clearer speech
  • Better pronunciation
  • Greater confidence when speaking
  • Help with public speaking or presentations
  • Support to reduce a strong accent

Those goals are completely valid. The approach, however, has evolved.

What is voice and speech coaching?

Voice and speech coaching is broader and more holistic than traditional elocution lessons.

When I work with clients at BESPOKEN, we focus not just on how you pronounce words, but on how you use your voice, speech and body. That includes:

  • Breath support
  • Vocal strength and stamina
  • Clarity and articulation
  • Modulation such as pace, pause, and resonance
  • Presence and impact

Voice and speech coaching is not about erasing who you are. It is about helping you communicate with clarity, confidence and authenticity.

For some clients, that may include exercises for speech clarity, which naturally softens an accent. For others, it may be about overcoming nerves, developing executive presence, or preparing for high stakes speaking situations.

Elocution lessons vs voice coaching: what is the difference and how do I decide?

Elocution lessons focus on pronunciation and diction

If your primary concern is mispronouncing certain sounds, mumbling, or being difficult to understand, elocution style work can be helpful. It often centres on articulation exercises and clarity of speech. It is often work done with children, hence it’s often followed by a class or a lesson and may cost less.

Voice and speech coaching develops the whole communication toolkit

Voice coaching, or audience engagement skills, a phrase I admittedly coined myself to be more all-encompassing, looks at how you sound and how you come across. It considers:

  • Your confidence levels
  • How your voice carries in a room
  • Whether people engage with what you say
  • How your physicality supports your speech

It is about impact, not just accuracy.

Modern coaching respects identity and accent

There was a time when elocution lessons implied that a regional accent needed to be removed. I do not subscribe to that view.

Your accent is part of your identity. My role is not to strip that away, but to help you be clearly understood and feel fully confident in professional or public settings.

If you choose to adjust certain features of your speech for clarity, that is your decision. The coaching is collaborative and tailored to your desired outcomes.

Why do people search for elocution lessons today?

Many of the clients who contact me after searching for elocution lessons are navigating:

  • Career progression and leadership roles
  • Media appearances or public speaking
  • Interviews and assessment centres
  • A desire to feel more assured in meetings
  • Returning to work after a break
  • English as an additional language

They are not looking to sound “posh”. They want to sound confident, credible and clear. They are sincere and value their identity.

That is where voice and speech coaching can make a significant difference.

Should you choose elocution lessons or voice and speech coaching?

If you are specifically looking for help with pronunciation and diction, we can absolutely address that. Clear speech is foundational.

However, most adults benefit from a more comprehensive approach. Voice and speech coaching supports you to:

  • Speak with authority
  • Manage nerves
  • Project your voice without strain
  • Communicate your ideas with clarity
  • Align your voice with your professional goals

In my experience, confidence grows not just from sounding clearer, but from being in control of your voice and your emotions.
